Republic Day Fair

The 5th of October is a bank holiday in Portugal. It was on this day in 1910 that the revolution occurred, Dom Manuel II. was deposed and the First Portuguese Republic was established.

And this is the day when every year a hand-craft fair is held in the centre of Coimbra, on the main pedestrianized street. I was participating too and herds of sheep were baffled and owls were flying from my stand.

Next to mine was my friend’s stand. She is an interior and graphic designer, the owner Avedouda, and  keen crafter with an online shop. She was selling beautiful baby hats, bibs,  baby cot sheets and papier mache jewelry. She mixes traditional Portuguese techniques and style with the modern one.

As a designer and crafter she recently won the second prize of the National Artisan’s Competition with her papier mache Gallo (rooster) lamp.
